The Bar-headed Goose (Anser indicus) is a goose which breeds in Central Asia, mainly on the Tibetan plateau, in colonies of thousands near mountain lakes. They migrate over the Himalayas to spend the winter in India, Assam, Northern Burma and the wetlands of Pakistan. It migrates up to Magadi wetlands of Gadag district of Karnataka in the southern part of India; it has also been reported as migrating south from Siberia via the Qinghai lake region in China before its crossing of the Himalaya.
The Bar-headed Goose is one of the world's highest flying birds, having been seen at up to 10,175 m (33,382 feet); it has a slightly larger wing area for its weight than other geese and it is believed this helps the goose to fly high. The total population may be increasing.
LENGTH: 71-76 cm WEIGHT: 1.87-3.2 kg WINGSPAN: cm
The bar-headed goose is named from the two bars of brownish-black coloured feathers that wrap around the back of its head. This goose has a light grey body, white on its face and neck, orange legs, and bill. Its feet are webbed and it has broad wings.
HABITAT: During the breeding season they live near high altitude lakes and prefer areas with short grass. In winter they seek out grazing areas that are cultivated, relying on wheat, barley and rice crops.

FEEDING: Short grass, wheat, barley and rice.
CALL: In flight, its call is a typical goose honking.
FLIGHT: These geese rely on flapping their wings - not on gliding - and are able to fly over 50 miles an hour without wind assistance.
