LENGTH: 46 cm WEIGHT: 1.0-1.1 kg WINGSPAN: 77 cm
MALE: Breeding: Head purplish-black; bright crescent-shaped white patch on side of face at base of bill, thin at top, rounded at bottom; short, triangular black bill, eyes are golden yellow. Sides, breast, belly, and secondaries bright white whilst back, wings, and tail are black reaching onto shoulder with a series of white squares along sides above wings.
Non Breeding: like female, but with some black tinge at sides.
FEMALE: Chocolate brown head, pale yellow eyes and short triangular bill which is mostly yellow. Back, wings, tail slate gray with flanks with white belly and breast.
JUVENILE: Immature similar to female; first winter male similar to adult male, but has browner head, grey sides and chest, and smaller and less distinct white crescent on face.
HABITAT: Barrow's Goldeneye is seldom found with Common Goldeneye and lives largely on ponds, small lakes and rivers. Their breeding habitat is largely wooded lakes and ponds.
FEEDING: These diving birds forage underwater. They eat aquatic insects, crustaceans and pond vegetation. Insects and insect larvae, crustaceans, molluscs, and plant material
CALL: Guttural croaking, with various catlike squeals from males during courtship.
