The Long-tailed Duck [Clangula hyemalis] is a medium-sized, migratory sea duck. They breed in tundra pools and marshes, along sea coasts and mountain lakes in Alaska, northern Canada, northern Europe and Russia; wintering along the eastern and western coasts of North America, coastal northern Europe and Asia, the Black Sea, importantly the Baltic Sea.
The Long-tailed Duck is gregarious, forming large flocks in winter and during migration, the autumn migration occurs from September to October and non-breeders may over summer in the wintering areas.
Long-tailed Ducks are small, short bodied birds with small heads and bills, in flight they show uniquely all-dark wings but with long white 'shoulder blades'. Adults have white underparts.
MALE: Length 38-58 cm; Weight 800-1040 gm; Wingspan 66-79 cm. Bill black with pinkish ring on black head with white crown and patch around the eye; 10-15 cm pointed black tail; white legs; white flanks, belly and undertail coverts.
FEMALE: Length 38-58 cm; Weight 650-815 gm; Wingspan 66-79 cm. White head and neck with dark crown and dark face patch, grey brown back, white flanks and belly, grey bill, plumage and head somewhat darker in summer, short pointed tail.
IMMATURE MALE: Short black central tail feathers, white head and neck with dark crown and face patch, grey chest and back, whitish flanks and belly, black bill with pale near tip.
Typically feeding close to the surface, they are capable of diving to depths of 60m. Diet consists of crustaceans, molluscs, other marine invertebrates and fish; they also take freshwater insects, larvae, algae, grasses, and the seeds and fruits of tundra plants.
They characteristically land at sea with an unceremonious belly flop.
