LENGTH: 22-27 cm WEIGHT: 100 g WINGSPAN: 40 cm
Fieldfares are easily identified; both sexes are similar with plain reddish brown backs sandwiched between the striking cold grey colours of the head and rump. Underwings are white, underparts are white with a reddish wash to the breast. The breast and flanks are heavily spotted.
HABITAT: Breeds in woodland, especially birch, and scrub; winters on farmland, entering towns in bad weather.
FEEDING: It is omnivorous, eating a wide range of insects, invertebrates and earthworms in summer, and berries in winter.
CALL: The male has a simple chattering song, and a chattering flight and alarm call.
FLIGHT: In flight show conspicuously white underwing coverts with a clear contrast between the white lower belly and the black tail.
